Uncut Pair Of United States Lottery Tickets Dated In 1776
Partly-printed uncut pair of lottery tickets from the “United States Lottery – Class the Fourth”. “The Bearer of this ticket will be entitled to such Prize as shall belong thereto in the Fourth Class of the Lottery of the United States, agreeable to a Resolution of Congress, passed in Philadelphia, Nov. 18, 1776.” On November 18, 1776 the Continental Congress enacted a national lottery in four classes, consisting of 100,000 tickets in each class. The sales were much slower than predicted in all classes and the final outcome proved to be very poor. The tickets are endorsed on the verso by a Joseph Sam’l. Woodbridge. Small cut out area in the upper left corner. Fine.
