"M Washington" on a small piece of laid paper. S. 2½"x ½".n.p. n.d. This signature was likely cut from one of her letters.
Martha’s signature is very rare, far more so than her famous husband’s. Martha’s signature is accompanied by an 1852 note of provenance written by Esther Marie Lewis, the mother of George Washington Lewis, and a direct descendant of Martha Washington. The note states: "Autographs of Mrs. Martha Washington for G. Washington Lewis his Great-Great Grandmother left by his Grandmother E. P. Lewis (Written by his mother EM Lewis)". E.P. Lewis (nee Eleanor Parke Custis) was the daughter of John Custis, Martha’s son, who was adopted by George Washington after he married Martha.
This is a wonderful opportunity for the serious autograph collector to obtain a signature that is historically significant, very rare, and which can be tied directly to the family. A perfect combination of rarity and history. $9,500.00
