BUCKNER, SIMON BOLIVAR
Originally in favor of Kentucky's remaining neutral in the Civil War, Buckner eventually sided with the Confederacy, being commissioned a brigadier general. He surrendered Ft. Donelson, built the defenses of Mobile, commanded the Department of Louisiana, and negotiated the surrender of the trans-Mississippi armies to the Union. After the war, he became a successful businessman and Governor of Kentucky.
