SIGNIFICANT ALEXANDER HAMILTON ALS EAGERLY SEEKING INFORMATION ON AVAILABLE ARMS FOR CAVALRY IN PREPARATION FOR THE SUPPRESSION OF THE WHISKEY REBELLION

Important Autograph Letter Signed. September 9, 1794. 7x8". Signed "Mr. Hamilton", in the third person addressed to the commissary-general Samuel Hodgson, no place, with the address panel, 5" x 3", in Hamilton's hand:

"Samuel Hodgson, Esq, / To be carried immediately to Mr. Hodgson". In full: "Mr. Hamilton requests Mr. Hodgson to furnish him immediately with a return of whatever accoutrements & arms for Cavalry may be in the public store. Specify also such as have been lately sent forward".

The militia force of 13,000 men was organized under the personal command of Washington, Hamilton, and General Henry "Lighthorse Harry" Lee, the army marched to Western Pennsylvania and quickly suppressed the revolt. This marked the first time under the new Constitution that the federal government used military force to exert authority over the nation's citizens. It also was the first time that a sitting President would personally command the military in the field.

The Whiskey Rebellion was an uprising that had its origins in 1791 and culminated in an insurrection in 1794 in the Monongahela Valley in western Pennsylvania by Appalachian settlers who fought against a federal tax on liquor and distilled drinks.
