Scarce Confederate General
Orders Troop Movements

HUMPHREY MARSHALL (1812 – 1872). Confederate general during the Civil War, Congressman, Minister to China. Scarce War Date Autograph Letter Signed . 1 page. 7¼ x 9¼" from Brigade Head Quarters Camp Martin, January 17th 1862:

"The regiments of Col. Williams and Col. Moore will move together to Bergens – the point in the Caney fork road to Whitesburg where the road turns off to Hazard Court House. It is desirable this movement shall be made as early as the commands can be got ready to move – Say by Sunday morning at farthest. By Order of H. Marshall, Brig. Genl. Comdg."

Marshall suffered a crushing defeat in January at the Battle of Middle Creek, a deciding factor in control of Big Sandy Valley. It was a loss which cemented Union control of Eastern Kentucky and Marshall’s troops retired south. In March, a month before these orders were penned, Marshall sent a letter to Jefferson Davis describing the apathy of the people of the area, and the unwillingness of men to be drafted into service. He had been in Lebanon almost a week, and had spent three weeks in Wise County. He would resign his commission in June of 1862, only to be reappointed four days later. A fine content letter from this scarce general. Fine.
