Very Rare New York & Erie Railroad Company Bond Signed On Verso By Millard Fillmore As Comptroller

1847, New York. $1000 bond bearing 7% interest. Black. Engraved vignette of an early steam locomotive at top center, bridge at bottom. Engraved by Danforth and Hufty. Attached red seal at lower left, revenue stamp at upper right. Signed on verso as comptroller of New York by MILLARD FILLMORE. (1800-1874). Thirteenth President of the United States. Fillmore served as comptroller of the State of New York, a position he held from January 1848 to February 1849, at which time he resigned to take office as Vice-President of the United States under Zachary Taylor. Upon Taylor’s sudden death in July 1850, Fillmore became President. One of less than ten that originally surfaced. A fine autographed railroad rarity. The top margin has significant paper loss and some dampstaining as is typical for this piece. Stamp and perf cancelled, neither affecting Fillmore's signature.

Wagner Palace Car Co. Issued To D.O. Mills And Signed By Him On Verso

 MILLS, DARIUS OGDEN
1890, New York. Stock certificate for 192 shares. Brown/Black. A choice multi-engraved certificate depicting a steam locomotive hauling Wagner cars flanked by building scenes. This company came into existence as a result of a reorganization of the New York Central Sleeping Car Company in 1865 which had manufactured Webster Wagner's widely popular sleeping cars exclusively for the New York Central Railroad. The company manufactured both sleeping cars and drawing-room cars, later incorporating some of the Pullman companies innovations by contract with the company. Issued to and signed on verso by Darius Ogden Mills (1825-1910). Merchant; Banker; Philanthropist. Following the discovery of gold in California in 1848, Mills set out with the necessary money to begin a merchandising or banking business. Upon arriving in San Francisco in 1849, Mills at once established a trading business buying gold dust, selling goods and dealing in New York exchange. His success led to the formation of the Bank of D. O. Mills & Co. in 1850 which thereafter led to the accumulation of a large fortune. Diamond cut cancellations at officers' signatures. Very Fine.
